Motion Tracking

When you watch a video of a kid jumping around, you know that you are watching a video of a kid jumping around. And if someone asked you to follow the kid’s face with your finger, you could probably do it quite accurately.

But to a computer, video is just a blur of pixels changing over time. It wouldn’t be able to interpret what the video is showing. So if you were to ask it to follow the same kid in the video, it would have no idea what you’re talking about.

Motion tracking is telling the computer what is important in the video footage so it can track its motion across the video.

So in the case of the “jumping kid” video, we could track the kid’s face and then add in a fancy hat to follow the kid’s head.
