Charmuu Video Curation Platform

Completed on Monday, June 29, 2015 for Vivid Digital Ltd.

The rise of the Web brought about the democratization of content creation; to a point where the abundance of content has allowed curation platforms to be a perfectly viable service to provide. Charmuu is one such service.

The site aims to target a young female audience through the curation of videos made by popular influencers in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Invisible Design

The design aims to be minimalistic, even invisible, to let the content shine through. But at the same time, the site needs to retain a sense of identity. To achieve this, the pages employ a grid layout with card-like elements with subtle layering to place emphasis on the content.

The design consciously avoids the use of side-column, especially on the video-viewing page, to provide a distraction-free viewing experience for the visitor.

To create a sense of identity for the website, I avoided the use of warm hues of pink and red usually associated with the target audience, but rather opted for a relatively unique shade of aqua and turquoise as the accent color. When coupled with a geometric yet organic design of the logo, the video curation platform is able to differentiate itself from its competitors.

Smart Thumbnails

Video thumbnails would become muted previews for the content the user hovers the cursor over it. Once this feature was implemented, viewership nearly doubled as the previews attracted more visitors to continue watching the video from the previews.

Charming on Mobile

The site is designed responsively so that when it is viewed on the mobile device, the grid layout automatic resizes to provide a viewing experience better suited for smaller screens.

API Powered Content Management

A robust content management system was developed to allow the team of video curators to effortless manage the videos on the website.

To optimize the efficiency of adding videos and influencers into  the system, the CMS is  deeply integrated with the YouTube API so that curators simply need to submit a YouTube link and the system will automatically retrieve all the information associated with the video or influencer (thumbnail, title, description, etc).

This greatly reduced the workload of the curation team and allowed to truly focus on video selection instead of data-entry.
